Binance's BSC Successfully Tests Quantum-Resistant Upgrade but Faces Data-Driven Scaling Challenge
Binance Smart Chain, or BSC, is moving to adopt post-quantum cryptography in preparation for a future in which quantum computers could break today's digital signatures. The upgrade uses the NIST-standardized ML-DSA-44 algorithm while retaining the existing wallet address format, reducing migration costs for users and applications. The effort represents a significant step toward the long-term security of blockchain assets.
BSC recently said it had successfully completed a quantum-resistant upgrade in a test environment, validating transaction signing and compatibility with existing addresses. However, the larger signatures made each transaction about 37 times its original size and reduced transaction throughput by about 40%. The results show that the technical migration is feasible, but no mainnet launch date has been announced. TPS and storage capacity remain key scaling challenges.
