Pokémon Card Challenge Draws 6,000 AI Teams for $300,000 Prize
The Pokémon Company has teamed up with Google-owned competition platform Kaggle to turn its trading card game into a proving ground for AI agents. Unlike Go, where the full board is visible, card battles involve concealed hands, random draws and uncertainty about an opponent’s strategy, testing whether systems can plan, infer intent and manage risk with incomplete information.
More than 6,000 teams worldwide joined the two-month competition, pursuing a prize pool exceeding $300,000. Participants trained autonomous agents to select cards and adapt their tactics as matches unfolded. The turnout underscores growing interest in using imperfect-information games to benchmark AI decision-making, extending competitive research beyond the fully observable environments that drove earlier breakthroughs in games such as Go.
