OpenAI Launches Education Plugins for ChatGPT Work and Codex

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work on July 9, 2026, as an agent for longer, multi-step assignments spanning files, connected applications and the web, while Codex remains oriented toward coding and software engineering. The education plugins extend that agentic model into classrooms and universities, packaging repeatable workflows that can help educators and students move beyond simple chatbot responses to produce research, teaching materials and working software.

OpenAI said on Aug. 5 that the new plugins target K-12 and higher-education users, supporting lesson and curriculum development, academic research, data analysis and programming in ChatGPT Work and Codex. The company did not disclose separate pricing for the plugins. In a related student initiative, verified university students in the U.S. and Canada can claim $100, or 2,500 credits, for Codex use, with the balance expiring 12 months after issuance.
