Micron Starts 1α DRAM Manufacturing at Virginia Fab

1 reports · First detected 2026-05-25 · Last active 2026-05-25

Micron Technology, the only U.S.-based memory manufacturer, is bringing its 1α DRAM process to its Manassas, Virginia, fabrication plant, marking the first domestic production of a technology previously made solely in Asia. The node, described by Micron as the most advanced memory technology manufactured in the United States, is designed for long-lifecycle DDR4 and LP4 products used in automotive, defense and aerospace, industrial, networking and medical applications, strengthening supply resilience for strategically important sectors.

Micron said on May 22, 2026, that it had started 1α DRAM manufacturing following an investment of more than $2 billion to expand and modernize the Manassas fab, backed by federal, state and local incentives. The project will quadruple the site’s DDR4 wafer supply and support more than 3,100 direct manufacturing and community jobs. Qualified production is expected by the end of calendar 2026. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick joined Micron Chief Executive Sanjay Mehrotra and other officials at the launch event.
