Microsoft Deepens Mistral Alliance in European AI Push

Founded in Paris in 2023, Mistral has emerged as one of Europe’s leading generative-AI challengers and a key test of the region’s push for greater technological sovereignty. Microsoft began a multiyear partnership with the startup on Feb. 26, 2024, including a 15 million-euro investment and distribution of Mistral models through Azure. The expanded relationship matters as governments and regulated companies seek advanced AI while retaining control over data residency, operations and deployment.

Microsoft and Mistral said on July 21, 2026, that they had signed a new multibillion-dollar agreement to expand AI infrastructure in Europe. Microsoft will tap Mistral’s enlarged Europe-based GPU capacity, built with thousands of NVIDIA Vera Rubin processors, for AI development and its cloud and AI services. Mistral Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 are now available in Microsoft Foundry, while Medium 3.5 has also entered Copilot Studio, with deployment spanning cloud, connected and fully disconnected environments.
