Microsoft Deepens Mistral Alliance in European AI Push

Paris-based Mistral has emerged as a leading European contender in generative AI, with a focus on open models and deployments that give governments and regulated businesses greater control over data and operations. Expanding its alliance with Microsoft links that sovereign-AI proposition to Azure’s global distribution, while giving the US software company additional European computing capacity and a broader selection of models for customers seeking alternatives to closed systems.

Microsoft and Mistral said on July 21, 2026, that they had signed a multibillion-dollar agreement to expand AI infrastructure in Europe, though they did not disclose an exact value. Mistral will add thousands of NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs, with Microsoft using part of that capacity for AI development and cloud services. Mistral Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 are now available through Microsoft Foundry, while Medium 3.5 has also been added to Microsoft Copilot Studio.
