Taiwan Water Deploys AI to Advance Smart Water Management and Low-Carbon Transition

Taiwan Water Corporation supplies more than 7 million households, or about 18 million people, across Taiwan, excluding parts of greater Taipei. It manages 476 water treatment plants, 140 water supply systems and more than 60,000 kilometers of pipelines. Facing extreme weather, labor shortages, rising energy costs and the 2050 net-zero target, the company is applying AI to precision chemical dosing, energy monitoring and predictive equipment maintenance to strengthen supply resilience and operational efficiency.

Taiwan Water said on June 17, 2026, that the Tsengwen Water Treatment Plant, which supplies 130,000 metric tons of water a day, would fully deploy an integrated smart system and enter fully automated operation in January 2027. The system is expected to cut chemical use by about 15%, electricity consumption by 15% and carbon emissions by 10%–12%. The Qingzhou Water Treatment Plant in Yilan saves more than 15% on chemicals annually, while pumping energy consumption at Hsinchu’s Second Water Treatment Plant has fallen 9.6%, saving NT$1.13 million in annual electricity costs. Equipment anomalies can also be flagged several weeks in advance.
