Swift Delays ISO 20022 Structured Address Deadline
ISO 20022 is intended to replace free-form payment messages with richer, machine-readable data, improving automation, compliance screening and straight-through processing in cross-border transactions. More than 98% of payment instructions now use the standard after Swift ended coexistence with legacy MT messages in 2025. The next hurdle is upstream data quality, particularly whether corporate ERP and treasury systems can supply complete postal-address fields.
Swift said on Aug. 27, 2026, that it would postpone the Nov. 14 removal of fully unstructured postal addresses and defer all payments changes under Standards Release 2026. It has not set a replacement deadline and plans to provide an update by December after consulting banks, central banks, payment infrastructures and corporates. In July, 58.3% of debtor addresses and 59.3% of creditor addresses remained unstructured; the Federal Reserve also shifted the related Fedwire release to November 2027.
