GitHub Brings Claude Agent to JetBrains IDEs, Enhances Copilot CLI Task Controls
GitHub Copilot is evolving from a code-completion tool into a development agent capable of autonomously planning work, executing tasks and modifying files. Bringing Anthropic’s Claude into JetBrains IDEs allows developers to switch agents without leaving their editor. It also enables companies to deploy and manage custom agents centrally, affecting tool selection, governance and workflow standardization across teams.
GitHub announced on June 22, 2026, that the Claude agent had entered public preview in GitHub Copilot for JetBrains IDEs. Users must first install the Claude Code CLI, while enterprise customers also need an administrator to enable the preview policy. Copilot CLI added three controls for long-running tasks: users can queue a message, redirect the agent after its current tool finishes, or interrupt the task and send a new message immediately.
