BHIM App Adds Biometric Authentication for UPI Payments Up to ₹5,000

1 reports · First detected 2026-04-03 · Last active 2026-04-03

BHIM is a Unified Payments Interface (UPI) mobile payment app launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and operated by its subsidiary, NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSL). UPI is critical infrastructure for everyday transfers, merchant QR-code payments and online purchases in India. Using on-device biometrics for small transactions can reduce failures and risks caused by forgotten, mistyped or shared UPI PINs.

NBSL announced on March 24, 2026, that the BHIM Payments App would allow users on supported Android and iOS devices to authorize individual UPI transactions of up to ₹5,000 using a fingerprint or facial recognition, without entering a UPI PIN each time. Biometric data remains on the device, while transactions above ₹5,000 still require UPI PIN verification.
