Former U.S. Government Contractor Employee Deleted Databases, Asked AI How to Cover His Tracks

Washington-based software provider Opexus serves more than 45 U.S. federal agencies and hosts government data in Virginia. Twins Sohaib and Muneeb Akhter had already been convicted of infiltrating government systems in 2015, yet retained access to sensitive EEOC, DHS and IRS data, highlighting risks in contractor screening and access controls.

After the pair were fired on February 18, 2025, Muneeb deleted about 96 databases within 56 minutes. At 4:58 p.m., he deleted a DHS production database and, one minute later, asked an AI tool how to erase SQL logs. He also stole IRS documents containing the personal information of at least 450 people. Sohaib was convicted on May 7, 2026, and is due to be sentenced on September 9. He faces up to 21 years in prison. The financial loss was not disclosed.
