HSBC Wins BoE Approval to Go Live in UK Digital Securities Sandbox
The UK’s Digital Securities Sandbox, launched in 2024 and jointly overseen by the Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority, lets firms test distributed-ledger infrastructure with real securities under regulatory limits. The regime runs until January 2029 and covers instruments including government and corporate bonds. HSBC’s entry into the live phase is significant because it provides an early test of whether tokenised issuance and settlement can operate safely inside regulated capital markets.
On July 13, 2026, the Bank of England cleared HSBC Bank plc through Gate 2, making HSBC Orion the first platform authorised to go live as a Digital Securities Depository in the sandbox. Orion can support the issuance, servicing and settlement of digitally native bonds. HSBC says the platform has already facilitated more than $5 billion of digital bond issuance globally and is set to support Britain’s Digital Gilt Instrument pilot, expected in the first quarter of 2027.
