Connecticut Brings Generative AI Subscriptions Under Consumer Law
Generative AI products are increasingly sold through subscriptions whose terms govern model access, usage caps and changing features. Those conditions can be buried in lengthy agreements, leaving customers unaware of material restrictions until after payment. Connecticut’s legislation treats that fine print as a consumer-protection matter, extending state oversight of AI beyond data, safety and discrimination concerns to the transparency of everyday digital transactions.
Under the new law, providers of generative AI subscription services must clearly disclose their terms before a consumer buys or renews a plan and obtain written acknowledgment. The required disclosures cover access to AI models, limitations on use and changes to available functions. The measure takes effect on Oct. 1 and will be enforced by the Connecticut attorney general under the state’s consumer-protection framework.
