Google Cloud and OpenAI Drive Shift Toward Agentic Enterprises and Autonomous Models

Generative AI is evolving from a conversational tool that responds to prompts into agentic systems capable of planning autonomously, calling tools and completing multistep tasks. Google Cloud sees this as a new architecture for enterprise operations, while OpenAI is advancing agentic computing through more capable models. Neither company disclosed the value of related investments or transactions.

At its Next ’26 conference in 2026, Google Cloud declared the arrival of the “agentic enterprise” era and unveiled the Gemini enterprise agent platform and new TPUs designed to lower AI computing costs. Around the same time, OpenAI released GPT-5.5 with stronger autonomous planning and task-execution capabilities, signaling that competition has shifted from chat features to end-to-end work agents.
