Publishers Weigh Blocking Google as AI Overviews Drain Traffic
Google’s AI Overviews increasingly answer queries at the top of search results, reducing the need for users to visit the publishers whose reporting and data underpin those responses. The shift is straining a decades-old bargain: websites let Google index their material in exchange for referral traffic that supports advertising, subscriptions and affiliate sales. Publishers now face a difficult choice between protecting content from uncompensated AI use and preserving visibility in the world’s dominant search engine.
In July 2026, The Wall Street Journal reported that Reddit, USA Today, Reuters, Politico, The Economist and People Inc. were reassessing Google’s access. USA Today’s U.S. organic search traffic had fallen nearly 50% in a year, while Reddit was reviewing a Google content-licensing agreement worth about $60 million annually. The contrast sharpened on July 22, when Alphabet said second-quarter Google Search & other revenue rose 17% to $63.27 billion. No coordinated ban has been announced, but several publishers are weighing crawler restrictions, registration walls or limits on free articles.
