Taiwan Police Urge Zero-Trust Defense Against AI Scams

Generative AI has lowered the cost of producing convincing text, voice and images, giving fraud networks more tools to impersonate people and manipulate emotions. Taiwan’s Criminal Investigation Bureau said fake investment pitches, romance scams and online-shopping fraud use different narratives but exploit similar psychological triggers, including urgency, greed and emotional attachment, to persuade victims to surrender money or personal information.

Chuang Ming-hsiung, head of the bureau’s Prevention Division, recently analyzed the three common scam categories and urged the public to adopt a “zero trust” approach to online messages, unfamiliar identities and investment solicitations. He said fraud prevention should draw on influenza control: sustained public education and heightened awareness can build “digital immunity,” limiting the spread and impact of AI-enabled scams before they claim more victims.
