China’s AI Micro-Drama Boom Deepens Profit Squeeze
China’s micro-drama industry is embracing generative AI across scriptwriting, storyboarding and video production, sharply reducing the time, cost and staffing needed to bring a series to market. The lower barrier has drawn more independent creators and small production teams into an already crowded sector. But the surge in supply has not produced a comparable increase in paid demand, leaving creators to compete more intensely for audience attention, advertising revenue and platform distributions.
In July, a new AI-produced micro-drama was released in China every 36 seconds on average, with AI titles accounting for more than 70% of all new series launched during the month. Profitability has lagged far behind that production boom: only about 1.3% of works reached break-even, according to the reported figures. The imbalance highlights how faster and cheaper production is accelerating content saturation and price competition without improving the odds that creators will recover their investment.
