Meta to End Horizon Worlds VR Support and Shift to Mobile
Meta launched Horizon Worlds in 2021, initially positioning it as a centerpiece of the metaverse and the Quest VR ecosystem, but user growth fell short of expectations. Reality Labs has accumulated losses of about $83.5 billion, while the platform faces competition from cross-device social entertainment services such as Roblox. Those pressures have prompted Meta to scale back the VR expansion it began five years ago.
Meta has announced that Horizon Worlds will stop supporting VR headsets in June 2026 and become available only on mobile devices, formally severing the platform from its core Quest business. Reports said the VR version once had only about 900 concurrent users. Meta will now seek to lower barriers to entry through mobile phones and attract a larger pool of players and creators.
