Taiwan Stock Rally Triggers Brokerage App Outages, Regulator Demands Digital Upgrades
Trading volume in Taiwan stocks has surged, while retail investors rely heavily on mobile trading. Brokerage system capacity and backup capabilities are therefore critical to investors’ trading rights and market confidence. Firms including Cathay Securities and Taishin Securities have reported app outages or delays that could prevent investors from placing, modifying or canceling orders promptly.
Taiwan’s benchmark stock index surged more than 1,000 points intraday on April 10, 2025, as the Taishin Securities app again displayed loading screens and order-placement errors. The brokerage issued an urgent notice and later said service had been restored. Financial Supervisory Commission Chairman Thomas Huang asked the Securities and Futures Bureau and Taiwan Stock Exchange to closely monitor brokerages’ expansion of hardware, software and digital equipment, and to continue overseeing improvements in service quality.

Reports did not disclose the value of affected transactions. Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission said it would closely monitor the brokerages involved and direct firms to strengthen peak-traffic monitoring, system capacity and information and communications security measures to ensure stable financial services.
