Humanoid Robots Shift From Stunts to Factory Work
Humanoid robots are designed to operate in factories and warehouses built around human bodies, tools and workflows. That flexibility is appealing, but bipedal balance, dexterous handling, battery life and safety certification make general-purpose machines more complex and expensive than fixed robotic arms or other specialised systems. Their commercial value therefore depends less on resembling people than on reliably performing repetitive jobs such as material transfer, sorting and parts handling.
A Financial Times analysis published on Aug. 27, 2026, said the industry’s focus is shifting from eye-catching demonstrations of running, dancing and acrobatics toward measurable industrial output. The more credible deployment model currently places robots in controlled work areas, carrying out narrowly defined processes alongside human staff and conventional automation. The report cited no new order value or investment total; its central finding was that practical utility, rather than spectacle, has become the main test of commercialisation.
