Visa’s Pismo Executive Maps AI’s Role in Banking Modernisation
Core banking platforms underpin account management, deposits, lending and transaction processing, making their modernisation central to banks’ digital strategies. The shift toward real-time payments, cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence is increasing pressure on financial institutions to replace or rework legacy systems that can slow product launches, fragment data and raise the cost of adapting to new customer and regulatory demands.
Leonardo Collado, global general manager of Visa-owned Pismo, said on the latest Demystify Podcast that core banking modernisation has become one of the industry’s leading strategic priorities. He discussed how advances in AI could reshape banking operations and payment experiences, while modular technology architectures may help institutions upgrade services more quickly and prepare their infrastructure for the next phase of digital payments.

Many bank core systems evolved from monolithic architectures built decades ago, leaving data fragmented and upgrade cycles lengthy. That makes it difficult to support real-time analytics and AI applications. Through Pismo, its cloud-native modular platform, Visa allows banks to replace accounting, card issuance and payment functions in stages, reducing the risks of a wholesale migration.
Visa announced its $1 billion acquisition of Pismo in June 2023 and completed the deal in January 2024. More recently, Visa has stepped up efforts to let banks deploy standalone modules as needed and integrate real-time data. The approach is designed to accelerate personalized services, compliance monitoring and product launches while creating a scalable core foundation for generative AI deployment.
