Vitalik Buterin Says Obfuscation Could Enable Private Onchain Crypto Voting

3 reports · First detected 2026-06-29 · Last active 2026-06-29

Indistinguishability obfuscation (iO) transforms programs into forms that are difficult to reverse-engineer without changing how they function. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin believes combining the technology with blockchain could conceal ballots and resist collusion among participants. This would allow onchain governance to operate without trusted committees, making iO a potentially significant breakthrough in cryptography.

In a recent lengthy essay, Buterin called obfuscation cryptography crypto’s “final boss” and proposed using iO to build private, collusion-resistant onchain voting. As of July 19, 2026, however, the approach remained impractical. Even the most conservative construction would still carry high computational costs, and the report disclosed no specific cost, performance figures or launch date.
