AI Shift Lifts Upwork Client Spending as Customer Count Falls

1 reports · First detected 2026-08-11 · Last active 2026-08-11

Upwork’s marketplace offers an early view into how artificial intelligence is changing demand for skilled freelance labor. Generative AI is absorbing repetitive, lower-complexity assignments, reducing the volume of smaller contracts. At the same time, companies are spending more on AI specialists, strategic advice and complex projects that require domain expertise and human judgment, shifting the platform’s mix toward higher-value work across small businesses and large enterprises.

Upwork said on Aug. 10 that active clients fell 4% year over year to 763,000 in the quarter ended June 30, 2026. Gross services volume per active client rose 5% to a record $5,230, its eighth consecutive quarterly increase. Revenue declined 2% to $191.7 million, while total GSV dropped 4% to $966.4 million. GSV from AI-related work increased more than 22%, led by growth of over 50% in AI Strategy & Consulting.
