Taiwan Eases Domestic Bank Branch Rules as Nationwide Total Reaches 3,353
Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission revised rules governing new branches opened by domestic banks, easing an eligibility threshold previously based on pretax return on equity. Even if a bank falls short of that profitability standard, it may still apply to open one new branch a year if it meets requirements including a sound financial structure and regulatory compliance. The change will help banks adjust their physical networks to local demand for financial services.
Taiwan had 3,353 domestic bank branches as of the end of February 2026, showing that physical outlets continue to serve a role amid the growth of digital finance. The Financial Supervisory Commission has approved another eight locations that have yet to open. Once the banks complete site establishment and operational preparations, the total could rise to 3,361.
