Microsoft Weighs Legal Action Over Amazon-OpenAI Cloud Deal

Microsoft has invested in OpenAI since 2019. Their agreements give Azure the exclusive right to host stateless APIs providing access to OpenAI models, while first-party products such as Frontier are also expected to run on Azure. The new partnership therefore involves more than competition for cloud business: it also affects Microsoft's intellectual-property licensing, revenue sharing and Azure's advantage in the enterprise AI market.

Amazon and OpenAI announced a partnership on February 27, 2026, under which Amazon would invest $50 billion—an initial $15 billion and the remaining $35 billion once certain conditions are met. AWS would also become Frontier's exclusive third-party cloud distribution channel. Reports on March 18 said Microsoft was evaluating a lawsuit arguing that AWS should not be allowed to bypass Azure when offering the relevant products. The three companies remain in talks, and no lawsuit has been filed.
