Reddit Game Revives Hunt for Lost 8,000-Bitcoin Hard Drive

1 reports · First detected 2026-08-25 · Last active 2026-08-25

Welsh computer engineer James Howells mined 8,000 bitcoin in 2009, but a hard drive holding the wallet’s private key was mistakenly taken to Newport’s Docksway landfill in August 2013. As bitcoin prices surged, the inaccessible hoard became one of crypto’s best-known cautionary tales about custody and irreversible loss. Court filings in 2025 put its value at more than 600 million pounds, turning a discarded storage device into a long-running dispute over property rights, waste law and excavation risks.

On Aug. 24, 2026, a developer posted a 3D game prototype on Reddit’s r/Bitcoin forum that casts players as treasure hunters combing through a virtual landfill for Howells’ missing drive. The post quickly drew discussion, reviving the 13-year-old saga through dark humor and game mechanics. In the real case, the High Court of England and Wales dismissed Howells’ claim against Newport City Council on Jan. 9, 2025, leaving him without permission to excavate the site or recover compensation.
