Musk’s Grok Faces Mounting Competition as User Losses Accelerate and Market Share Slides
Elon Musk’s xAI has positioned Grok as a rival to models from OpenAI, Anthropic and others, while integrating it with social media platform X to broaden its reach. However, Grok is under pressure in model benchmarks, market share and user retention, suggesting that platform traffic and investment in computing power alone have yet to produce a sustainable competitive advantage.
The latest data show that Grok is losing users at an accelerating pace and its market share continues to decline, widening the gap with OpenAI and Anthropic. xAI plans to deploy substantial GPU resources in the third quarter to launch Grok-4, betting that expanded training capacity will deliver a leap in performance. Reports have not disclosed the number of GPUs, the investment amount or an exact release date.
