Xiaomi Unveils 3-Nanometer Xring O3 Chip to Advance On-Device AI

Xiaomi has relied heavily on Qualcomm and MediaTek processors for its premium smartphones, making in-house silicon central to its push for tighter hardware-software integration and less dependence on outside suppliers. The Xring O3, manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. using a 3-nanometer process, also advances Xiaomi’s strategy of running more artificial-intelligence workloads directly on devices rather than relying solely on cloud computing.

Xiaomi unveiled the Xring O3 with upgraded CPU and GPU performance and stronger local AI inference capabilities, according to reports. The chip is expected to debut in the company’s flagship Xiaomi 18 Fold handset. Successful mass production and broader adoption could reduce Xiaomi’s purchases from Qualcomm and MediaTek, reshape part of the mobile-chip supply chain and test whether proprietary silicon can help revive demand for the company’s smartphones.
