Google’s Conversational AI Search Rollout Sparks Controversy and Interest in Alternatives
Google announced a sweeping overhaul of its search service at Google I/O 2026, adding AI Overviews and conversational features that allow follow-up questions and integrate generative AI directly into search results. While the changes are reshaping how people access information, they have also raised concerns about content accuracy, the loss of website traffic and users’ inability to opt out of AI.
During the first week of Google’s AI search rollout, DuckDuckGo said U.S. downloads of its iOS app surged 33%, while other reports estimated that weekly installations rose by more than 30%. The market is also paying greater attention to alternative search engines such as Kagi and DuckDuckGo, which emphasize privacy and allow users to disable AI features. The shift suggests that some users are seeking options that preserve control over the content they see.
