AI Voice-Phishing Wave Targets Top Wall Street Hedge Funds
Voice phishing, or vishing, uses calls that impersonate executives or colleagues to pressure employees into surrendering credentials or granting network access. Generative AI raises the threat by reproducing voices, tone and phrasing at scale, making fraud cheaper and more convincing. For hedge funds overseeing tens of billions of dollars, a single compromised account could expose trading systems, confidential strategies and client information, turning an employee-level deception into a potentially market-sensitive breach.
The campaign, disclosed on Aug. 5, 2026, targeted Two Sigma Investments, Citadel, Point72 Asset Management and several private-equity firms in recent days. Two Sigma, which manages about $75 billion, said its security team quickly thwarted the vishing attempt and found no impact on its data or systems. Point72 told investors that no customer information was stolen, while Citadel declined to comment. No financial losses were reported, and the attackers have not been publicly identified.
