Financial Institutions Race to Turn Real-Time Payments Into an Edge
Real-time payments have shifted from emerging infrastructure to a core banking capability in the United States. The Clearing House launched its RTP network in 2017, and the Federal Reserve followed with FedNow on July 20, 2023. Both offer around-the-clock clearing and near-instant availability of funds, raising customer expectations while forcing financial institutions to rethink liquidity, fraud controls, reconciliation and back-office systems built around batch processing.
A recent industry assessment says most financial institutions have moved beyond the basic adoption decision, making execution and integration the new competitive battleground. The Clearing House raised RTP’s per-transaction limit to $10 million on Feb. 9, 2025, widening its potential for corporate and treasury payments. Institutions that connect real-time rails to core ledgers, cash management and customer workflows — while sustaining 24/7 resilience and transaction visibility — will be better placed to accelerate funds movement and turn payment speed into a durable advantage.
