Microsoft Unveils Project Zenith for Local AI Development

Microsoft introduced Project Zenith as the next step in a developer-focused Windows 11 initiative previewed at Build 2026. The experience combines high-memory hardware, preconfigured system settings and commonly used coding tools to make new machines ready for development out of the box. Its emphasis on running AI workloads locally could speed up model and agent experimentation while reducing developers’ reliance on cloud services that charge for token usage.

Announced on Sept. 4, 2026, Project Zenith targets devices with at least 64GB of unified memory and memory bandwidth above 250GB per second. Microsoft said the machines can run models with more than 30 billion parameters locally and without metered usage. The first devices will use AMD’s Ryzen AI Halo chips and include tools such as Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot and PowerToys, with additional hardware and silicon partners expected in the coming months.

Microsoft introduced Intelligent Terminal as an experimental fork of Windows Terminal, releasing version 0.1 on May 29, 2026. The project integrates AI coding agents through the Agent Client Protocol while retaining familiar features including tabs, profiles, PowerShell and Windows Subsystem for Linux workflows.
