OpenAI Proposes 5% U.S. Government Stake to Ease AI Regulatory Pressure
OpenAI is facing U.S. government scrutiny over AI safety, national competitiveness and industry concentration. Meanwhile, the rapid rise of Chinese open-source AI models is eroding the technology and cost advantages of U.S. companies. OpenAI has therefore considered giving Washington a direct equity interest and using a public wealth fund to align the gains from AI growth with public-policy objectives.
As of July 19, 2026, the Financial Times reported that OpenAI had proposed giving the Trump administration a 5% U.S. government stake. The holding would be worth about $42.6 billion at the proposed valuation, implying a total company valuation of roughly $852 billion. The proposal also calls for establishing a public wealth fund in hopes of easing political and regulatory pressure from Washington and strengthening policy support for competition with Chinese open-source models.
