Google Bets on Space-Based TPUs and Quantum Computing as AI Chip Crunch Threatens to Persist Through 2027
Google CEO Sundar Pichai expects tight supplies of AI chips could persist through the end of 2027, with computing capacity and energy now key constraints on scaling large models. Google is therefore advancing both its Project Suncatcher space-based data center initiative and quantum computing research in hopes of easing terrestrial infrastructure bottlenecks and reducing risks from chip shortages.
Recent reports say Google has approached SpaceX and other launch providers to explore deploying TPUs and AI data centers in orbit, but it has not disclosed any investment amount, launch date or partnership terms. Pichai also predicts AI agent workflows will be widely adopted in 2027, giving companies capable of operating with AI-native architectures a clear competitive advantage.
