Taiwan Lawmaker Proposes Adding US Dollar Stablecoins to Forex Reserves; Central Bank Chief Says Circumstances May Change

4 reports · First detected 2026-03-31 · Last active 2026-04-02

Taiwan’s central bank manages about $602.9 billion in foreign-exchange reserves, with more than 80% invested in US Treasury securities to balance safety, liquidity and returns. Although US dollar stablecoins enable rapid cross-border transfers on blockchains, they carry risks involving issuer freezes, cybersecurity, custody and regulation. Adding them to national reserves would have implications for geopolitical risk diversification and the security of foreign-exchange assets.

On March 31, 2026, Kuomintang lawmaker Ko Ju-chun proposed at the legislature’s Finance Committee that the central bank conduct a small-scale pilot adding US dollar stablecoins to part of its foreign-exchange reserves. He cited global stablecoin transaction volume of $46 trillion in 2025. Central bank Governor Yang Chin-long said its position remained unchanged for now but added that “circumstances will change,” without committing to an allocation or implementation timetable.
