Meta Blocks Over 750,000 Underage Accounts in Australia

1 reports · First detected 2026-08-14 · Last active 2026-08-14

Australia’s social media ban for children under 16 took effect on Dec. 10, 2025, requiring covered platforms to take reasonable steps to prevent minors from holding accounts. Companies that systematically fail to comply can face penalties of up to A$49.5 million. Overseen by Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, the rules rank among the world’s toughest age restrictions for social media and have made reliable age detection a central enforcement challenge.

Meta said it has blocked more than 750,000 Facebook and Instagram accounts belonging to Australian users under 16. The company uses AI to assess age-related signals in posts, comments and profile information, while continuing to identify accounts that may be attempting to evade the restrictions. Meta also renewed its call for age verification to be handled centrally by operating-system providers or app stores, including those run by Apple and Google, rather than separately by each social platform.

Meta Unveils AI Age-Detection Tool to Strengthen Child Safety on Facebook and Instagram2026-05-06 · 1 reports · similarity 0.84

Meta's Facebook and Instagram generally prohibit children under 13 from creating their own accounts. The platforms have historically relied heavily on users' self-reported birth dates and reports from third parties, making it difficult to identify accounts that misrepresent their age. Regulators worldwide continue to press social media companies to reduce children's exposure to inappropriate content, making age verification a key platform-governance priority.

Meta recently announced an AI age-detection tool that scans photos and videos on Facebook and Instagram for visual cues such as height and body structure to estimate whether a user is under 13. If the system flags an account as potentially below the minimum age, Meta will first disable it and require age confirmation. As of July 20, 2026, Meta had not announced a date for a full rollout.
