Reform UK Leader Nigel Farage Faces Parliamentary Probe Over $7 Million Donation From Crypto Billionaire

Reform UK has attracted financial backing from cryptocurrency executives as Nigel Farage seeks to expand the party’s influence in British politics. The concentration of political funding among a small number of wealthy donors has intensified scrutiny of whether the digital-asset industry could gain greater sway over the party’s approach to cryptocurrency regulation and broader financial policy.

UK Electoral Commission data showed BitMEX co-founder Ben Delo donated about £4 million to Reform UK in the second quarter of 2026, accounting for nearly 75% of the party’s donations during the period and implying a quarterly total of roughly £5.3 million. Farage is also facing an investigation linked to donations from several cryptocurrency industry figures, sharpening questions over funding transparency and potential policy influence.

Britain’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, Daniel Greenberg, is examining whether Reform UK leader Nigel Farage breached House of Commons rules by failing to register a £5 million ($6.7 million) gift received in 2024 from Thailand-based cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne. Farage says the money was a private gift for personal security, made before he entered Parliament. UK rules require newly elected lawmakers to declare benefits worth more than £300 received in the prior year when they could reasonably be linked to political activity.

Farage resigned his Clacton seat on July 7, temporarily halting the inquiry, before winning it back with 63% of the vote in an Aug. 13 by-election. The commissioner resumed the investigation within hours of the result being announced on Aug. 14. Scrutiny also extends to Farage’s financial relationship with crypto-gambling entrepreneur George Cottrell, who reportedly provided staffing and security support. A finding of misconduct could result in suspension or expulsion from Parliament and potentially force another Clacton by-election.

Christopher Harborne is a major shareholder in stablecoin issuer Tether and a UK political donor. He gave former Reform UK leader Nigel Farage a £5 million gift, raising concerns about political-finance transparency and declarations of interest because of its size and the ties between a cryptocurrency businessman and a politician.

The bank that handled the £5 million payment filed a suspicious activity report, or SAR, with UK authorities in May. An SAR is a risk report that financial institutions are legally required to file and does not in itself constitute a finding of criminal conduct. The UK Parliament is investigating whether Farage declared the gift as required and is reviewing the related compliance procedures.

The donation highlights the influence of crypto capital on British political fundraising and the debate over financial regulation.

Christopher Harborne donated £3 million to Reform UK in November 2025. The contribution boosted the party's total political donations for 2025, taking its annual fundraising above that of both the Conservative Party and the Labour Party. It also brought the financial ties between Farage and wealthy cryptocurrency investors under closer scrutiny.
