AI Startup Funding Surges Past $221 Billion in First Quarter of 2026
Artificial intelligence has become a central focus of venture capital allocation, particularly in North America, where funding is concentrated among startups developing models and enterprise workflow applications. Companies including OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI have attracted capital because of their substantial computing needs and commercialization potential, putting pressure on funding allocations to sectors such as crypto.
North American AI startups raised $221 billion in the first quarter of 2026, from January through March, roughly six times the previous quarter's total. The surge was driven largely by massive funding rounds for OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI. Global AI investment reached $242 billion over the same period, accounting for about 80% of worldwide venture funding and highlighting the heavy concentration of capital in AI.
