1Password Integrates OpenAI Codex to Secure AI Agent Credential Management

As companies allow AI agents to operate directly in development environments, credentials such as API keys and database passwords could be exposed if they enter prompts or model context. The 1Password integration with OpenAI Codex separates identity authorization from secret values, ensuring that agents continue to follow the principle of least privilege while performing tasks.

1Password recently announced that it had connected OpenAI Codex through a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. Agents can be authorized to use required credentials during a task without being able to view the secret values, while sensitive information remains outside the model context. As of July 20, 2026, the company had not disclosed a transaction value, formal launch date or quantified results.
