Jensen Huang Addresses Space Data Centers and AI Energy and Cooling Challenges
Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang responded to a proposal for space-based data centers from Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Power consumption and cooling demand at terrestrial AI facilities continue to rise. Although solar energy is available in space, the absence of air convection means waste heat can be expelled only through thermal radiation using large radiator panels. Heat dissipation, deployment costs and maintenance capabilities will determine whether the concept can become commercially viable.
As of July 19, 2026, Huang said moving data centers entirely into space would still take several years, but confirmed that Nvidia Hopper-architecture GPUs were already operating there, mainly processing satellite imagery. Recent discussions have focused on a three-layer thermal-management architecture and four key technologies. Nvidia has yet to announce a construction timetable, radiator-panel dimensions or an investment amount, and commercialization still depends on proving the economics of energy, cooling and launch costs.
