Tim Draper Tells Bitcoin Conference That Holding Bitcoin Is Now an Unavoidable Responsibility
Tim Draper, founder of Silicon Valley venture-capital firm Draper Associates, suffered bitcoin losses when Mt. Gox collapsed in 2014. In June of that year, he paid about $18.7 million for 29,656 bitcoins auctioned by the U.S. Marshals Service, making him one of the earliest prominent large-scale holders.
Speaking at the 2026 Bitcoin Conference, Draper said holding bitcoin had shifted from an investment choice to a personal responsibility amid changes to the monetary system. He predicted that the global economy would first move from the dollar-based system to stablecoin payments before ultimately adopting bitcoin in full, citing his experience of moving from the Mt. Gox losses to winning the government auction.
