Taiwan Drone Exports Surge More Than 41-Fold, Chip Strength Bolsters China-Free AI Supply Chain

The Russia-Ukraine war has underscored the strategic value of drones and autonomous AI systems, prompting democracies to reduce their reliance on Chinese-made equipment. The Research Institute for Democracy, Society and Emerging Technology (DSET) said Taiwan could leverage its strengths in semiconductor manufacturing, AI computing and electronic components to play a key role in helping Europe build a “China-free supply chain.”

DSET data showed that Taiwan’s drone exports to Europe surged more than 41-fold in 2023 from a year earlier, reflecting its quiet supply-chain support for Ukraine’s resistance against Russia. The data did not disclose the actual value of the exports. Taiwan’s next step will be to institutionalize cooperation with Europe and other democratic allies, strengthening supply-chain resilience for battlefield drones and autonomous AI systems.
