The Dutch Finance Ministry’s treasury bank provides about 1,600 public institutions with digital services including account management, loan applications and financial statements, making it a critical part of the government’s funding infrastructure. The portal outage has slowed administrative processes and highlighted the operational and cybersecurity risks facing financial systems after a breach.

The Dutch Finance Ministry recently detected unauthorized access to systems within its policy departments and temporarily shut down the treasury bank’s digital portal as a result. About 1,600 public institutions were unable to check accounts, apply for loans or export reports online and had to switch to manual processes. As of publication, authorities had not disclosed the exact date of the attack, the amount of any losses or a timetable for restoring service.
