Ethereum, Base Drop Bid to Unify Account Abstraction Standards
Account abstraction is intended to make crypto wallets behave more like programmable accounts, enabling batched calls, sponsored gas payments and authentication with phone passkeys instead of requiring users to hold ETH and manage a single cryptographic key. Ethereum’s EIP-8141, or Frame Transactions, prioritizes flexible validation, censorship resistance, privacy and post-quantum security on Layer 1. EIP-8130, developed by Coinbase-backed Base, uses a new transaction type and an onchain Keystore, favoring predictable validation, scale, customization and compliance for Layer 2 networks.
Ethlabs researcher Derek Chiang said on Sept. 14, 2026, that collaboration between the EIP-8130 and EIP-8141 teams had broken down the previous week because every proposed compromise weakened one side’s core goals. Ethereum will continue with EIP-8141, which the Ethereum Foundation Protocol cluster labeled “must-ship” for the planned Hegotá upgrade. Base will pursue EIP-8130 through its Cobalt upgrade, scheduled for September 2026. If both proposals launch, wallet developers may need to support two native transaction formats, shifting the cost of fragmentation to infrastructure providers.

Account abstraction is intended to give Ethereum accounts more flexible validation, key management and transaction authorization, potentially making crypto wallets easier and safer to use. Bringing those capabilities into the protocol would affect wallet developers, applications and Ethereum-compatible chains. Debate over EIP-8130 centered on reconciling predictable costs for keystore operations with the greater flexibility offered by Frame transactions.
Ethereum contributors have now reached a compromise to restructure EIP-8130 into three composable proposals: EIP-8398, EIP-8399 and EIP-8400. The modular approach would allow individual chains to adopt only the components they need while preserving both cost predictability and transaction flexibility. As of Aug. 29, 2026, the package remains at the EIP proposal and community-discussion stage and has not been formally scheduled for, or included in, an Ethereum hard fork.
