S&P, Pantera Shift Crypto Indexing Toward Fundamentals
Crypto benchmarks have traditionally favored the largest tokens by circulating market value, a framework that says little about whether a network attracts paying users or returns economic value to holders. As institutional allocators expand beyond Bitcoin, analysts are increasingly examining protocol revenue, recurring fees and tokenomics, including buybacks, burns and staking rewards net of inflation. The shift matters because a popular blockchain can generate activity without creating durable demand for its token, leaving market capitalization disconnected from the economics investors ultimately own.
S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera Capital launched the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index on July 20, 2026, using Artemis onchain data to screen for recurring protocol revenue and tokenholder value accrual. The benchmark debuted with 18 assets generating more than $3 billion in combined annualized protocol revenue, led by Ether, BNB, Solana, TRON and Hyperliquid; Bitcoin was excluded. Over the three years through June 30, the index returned an annualized 25% in back-testing, versus 14% for the S&P Cryptocurrency BDA Index.
