Bitcoin Pizza Day Marks 16 Years Since First Real-World Bitcoin Purchase
On May 22, 2010, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz used the BitcoinTalk forum to exchange 10,000 bitcoins with Jeremy Sturdivant for two Papa John's pizzas. Widely regarded as the first recorded purchase of physical goods with bitcoin, the transaction showed that Bitcoin could move beyond a digital experiment and serve as a real-world payment method.
May 22, 2026, marked the 16th anniversary of Bitcoin Pizza Day. Reports estimated that the 10,000 bitcoins would now be worth more than $760 million, or about $380 million per pizza. That implies a price of more than $76,000 per bitcoin and highlights Bitcoin's evolution into a global economic network.
