GitLab Launches Act 2 to Overhaul AI Agent Development Platform, Announces Workforce Cuts

1 reports · First detected 2026-05-12 · Last active 2026-05-12

GitLab provides a platform for DevSecOps and collaborative software development. As AI agents gain the ability to generate, test and deploy code autonomously, system workloads are shifting from human operations to high-frequency machine requests. GitLab has responded with its “Act 2” strategy, which will rebuild the platform’s infrastructure to meet the performance and scale demands of autonomous AI development.

GitLab’s CEO most recently said Act 2 would include not only a technology transformation but also workforce cuts, a reduction in the number of countries where the company operates and the removal of some management layers. The measures are intended to reduce complexity and concentrate resources on the AI agent platform. Available information does not specify the announcement date, the number of jobs affected, the countries involved or any related financial amounts. The company has also yet to provide an implementation timetable.
