Silicon Valley Engineers Face AI Fatigue as Tenfold Efficiency Gains Fuel Burnout

Anthropic's Claude Code and Opus 4.6 are shifting software development away from line-by-line coding toward a model in which engineers plan, review and correct multiple AI tasks. The change is boosting output, but it also leaves humans accountable for code quality, cybersecurity and deployment outcomes. Their cognitive load has not fallen in step with automation.

As of July 20, 2026, developers in Silicon Valley said AI coding tools could make some tasks up to 10 times more efficient. But rapid task-switching, constant output validation and frequent decision-making also prolong periods of mental strain. Research shows that time saved does not necessarily translate into rest, making burnout a new risk.
