Open Source Foundation Commits NT$300 Million to Taiwan AI Push

The Open Source Foundation is seeking to make open-source development a cornerstone of Taiwan’s sovereign AI strategy. By organizing local engineers around influential international AI projects, the initiative aims to reduce dependence on proprietary technologies developed abroad and build domestic expertise in software maintenance, model deployment and system integration. The effort also provides a platform for closer collaboration among Taiwan’s technology industry, universities and developer community.

The foundation formally launched on July 30, 2026, with a pledge to invest NT$300 million ($9.2 million) over three years in Taiwan’s open-source AI engineering capacity. It plans to identify critical global projects, establish local contributor groups and build a technical community of 1,000 people. The program will also focus on talent development, giving Taiwanese engineers opportunities to participate directly in internationally used AI infrastructure and strengthen the island’s long-term technological autonomy.
