XRP Less Exposed to Quantum Threats Than Bitcoin, Experts Say

The XRP Ledger and Bitcoin both use elliptic-curve cryptography to protect assets. If a practical quantum computer could crack public keys, addresses whose public keys have already been exposed could be vulnerable to theft. Bitcoin launched in 2009 with a maximum supply of 21 million coins, while the XRP Ledger began operating in 2012 with an initial supply of 100 billion XRP. The extent of that exposure therefore has implications for asset security across both major networks.

The latest expert analysis says XRP accounts typically reveal their public keys only when they first sign a transaction, leaving a smaller share of the supply vulnerable to quantum attacks than Bitcoin. The XRP Ledger also natively supports key rotation and escrow time-locks, allowing users to replace authorized keys or delay the release of assets. The report did not identify the institutions involved or provide an estimated financial exposure or publication date for the analysis. For now, the quantum threat remains a forward-looking scenario.

Bitcoin transactions use elliptic-curve digital signatures to protect assets. Once an address reveals its public key, a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could eventually derive the private key and steal the funds. The threat is not exploitable today, but the permanent public record of blockchain data means exchanges and long-term holders must plan ahead to migrate to quantum-secure addresses.

Coinbase’s independent advisory board on quantum computing and blockchain released a report on June 11, 2026, estimating that the public keys for about 7 million BTC have been exposed. About 1.7 million BTC are held in early P2PK addresses, while roughly 5 million BTC are exposed through address reuse and largely consist of active funds such as exchange cold wallets. Attackers can collect the data now and attempt to crack it later.
