Amazon Calls for Government-Industry Partnership on AI Safeguards
Rapid advances in generative AI have intensified concerns about model misuse, loss of control and regulation lagging behind the technology. Some industry figures have called for a slowdown in development. Amazon argues that progress and safety are not mutually exclusive, saying models should undergo rigorous testing and carry effective safeguards before release so innovation can continue while risks are contained and monitored.
Amazon has called on the AI industry and governments to jointly develop robust safeguards instead of relying on a broad pause in technological development. The company said pre-release testing, built-in safety protections and public-private cooperation offer a more practical response to emerging risks. As of the latest reports, Amazon had not disclosed a timetable, funding commitment or effective date for the proposed framework.

The history behind this eventAmazon Adds Scam-Checking Tool to Alexa for Shopping
Impersonation scams often use bogus order alerts, Prime renewal notices or account warnings to pressure consumers into clicking links, disclosing credentials or making payments. The threat is growing: U.S. consumers reported $15.9 billion in fraud losses to the Federal Trade Commission in 2025, up from $12 billion in 2024. Amazon is extending Alexa for Shopping beyond product discovery and purchasing to help customers verify communications that claim to come from the company.
Amazon launched the feature in the United States on Sept. 2, 2026, offering an automated alternative for the roughly 360,000 customers who contact its service teams each year to check suspicious messages. Users can provide details from an email, text or phone call, and Alexa for Shopping compares the sender, content, timing and format with billions of communications sent by Amazon teams globally. Within seconds, it returns one of three findings: confirmed as official, apparently not from Amazon, or unable to verify. Each submission is also reported to Amazon’s customer-protection and enforcement teams.
